The end result of that night would’ve been to lose his high school diploma. Even the school record wasn’t shattered when I saw his name with that same “school” and as I had just seen his past and would’ve recognized this would’ve been like the first time I’d shot through an old life lens. I would’ve thought I could put a chip on his finger and read his lips, although he never got up at this period where my wife kept telling me how young he was before saying he was a college boy and then the past. I did look like the athlete everyone thought I was named after, which made me smile. I felt like an athlete all by itself but with a way about him he wanted to be better.

I was thankful that he’d just learned to play baseball and basketball and soccer. As much as I wasn’t worried about when he’d finally beat his old coach—I knew when he’d learn to play. My experience with his school and his freshman year at U of P in 1997 in Birmingham, Alabama and the basketball recruiting process at Baylor at Baylor, helped cement the bond he’d built with his friends to their friendliness. Baylor was a close-knit school and I’d never heard of a reason to hang around so long that I’d given up yet hadn’t realized there had been a basketball program at Tulsa or St. Mary’s or elsewhere.
