The past is in the present. She can’t move on until she comes to understand that was she the only one who lost out. This story by Laura’s father tries to take the easy route, and fails miserably.

As for her mother, Laura feels that knowing a woman’s past is something, yet it’s something they have to know. It’s time to unpack the box. Although–I didn’t find it interesting that Laura made a mother and a daughter into only one daughter until the last paragraph.

What I do know is that Laura desperately, emotionally clings to the truth that she was an alcoholic, and it’s just so upsetting to her that that’s also what she blames herself for losing her dad. Perhaps that was too much to handle. Finally, in the end Laura stands on her own.
