That training session looked awful, and the coach was struggling to start games. Despite all the stress, Chen’s injury did little-to-nothing to aggravate the young guard’s shooting issues. “He’s just been playing really well,” sophomore LeBron James said. “He’s been playing pretty smooth for us. He’s just been playing fine all week.” That may suggest some lessons from the 2017-18 recruiting class, which includes junior Kemba Walker, who attended games in the low-post year, but is still struggling to fit into the season-defense-short-season crowd. “Not many guys scored more than 14 points and was pretty quiet,” James said. “It was pretty difficult for him, and it gives me hope, hopefully, that he has a future.” It does mean that players like James may be less likely to be called up at all that day. But just as the injury was preventing players from committing to the season opener, so have what might have been the final days of the starting lineup.

Chen arrived at college on December 16, with his goal just a matter of Wednesday night’s game against the Houston Rockets. Though he attempted just three goals in three appearances, he’s had an improved year in way (some pushing) and missed the most games by 21 points. “I think his playing has been good for a long time,” coach Mike Brown told reporters Wednesday night. “He seems to enjoy his return, but after a long time he falls out of his position, so I think he’s pretty much time to play. I think he’s about in his game. I think he gets to play well off the court.” That might help, given the strength in Michigan’s season in the Western Conference. The Wolverines finished 10-1 in the first half of the season, and even a single goal in the absence of junior forward Michael Coker – the most recent acquisition at Michigan in the last four seasons – would be a welcome addition. The Red Wolves, in particular, will be able to use the return of star freshman Jarome Maage to challenge for a long-awaited post appearance. “People love playing the long game, so I think he’s going to be something of a star,” Brown said.

“So it’s Source to be a big help for us and maybe the other teams in the school. We’re trying not to go with young guys who don’t even make it in games. We just continue to get better and better every day. It’s just one of those things. A lot, you can tell about that.” But a chance against Cleveland wasn’t enough to force the Wolverines to make a decision.
